Florida is facing ongoing rescue operations following the devastation caused by Hurricane Milton, which has resulted in at least 12 confirmed deaths and widespread destruction. Emergency responders are working tirelessly to reach individuals trapped in flooded or damaged buildings.
Details of the Incident
Among the fatalities, five people were found deceased in an assisted living facility in St. Lucie County, which was struck by a tornado spawned by the hurricane. Additionally, three deaths were reported in Volusia County, while St. Petersburg authorities confirmed two more fatalities.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Governor Ron DeSantis announced that rescuers have successfully saved over 340 individuals from perilous conditions. In Tampa, around 100 residents were evacuated from a senior living facility. The Coast Guard also rescued a man who was clinging to debris approximately 50 miles offshore after his boat capsized.
Government Response
President Joe Biden highlighted the importance of preemptive measures, noting that many lives were saved due to residents heeding evacuation orders and safety advisories. Initially categorized as a Category 5 hurricane, Milton was later downgraded to a Category 3 as it made landfall, ultimately being classified as a Category 2 storm.
Current Conditions
As of Thursday, Hurricane Milton has moved away from Florida’s east coast but continues to produce strong winds and heavy rainfall in the area. Residents are urged to stay vigilant as recovery efforts proceed.
