On October 25, 2024, Google paid heartfelt tribute to the late Indian singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, with an animated doodle celebrating the anniversary of his Bollywood debut. KK’s first appearance in the industry occurred in 1996 with the song “Chhod Aaye Hum,” featured in the acclaimed film Maachis, directed by Gulzar.
Krishnakumar Kunnath ‘KK’ began his musical journey after graduating from Kirori Mal College at Delhi University. Initially exploring a career in marketing, he soon shifted his focus to music. His breakthrough came in 1994 when he submitted a demo tape that led to his first performances in commercial jingles, paving the way for his illustrious career.
In 1999, KK gained widespread recognition in Bollywood with the emotional track “Tadap Tadap” from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. That same year, he released his debut solo album, Pal, which became an instant hit. The album’s title track and the memorable song “Yaaron” turned into timeless anthems of friendship and nostalgia, resonating deeply with fans.
Throughout his remarkable career, Krishnakumar Kunnath ‘KK’ showcased his versatility by lending his voice to over 500 Hindi songs and more than 200 tracks in various regional languages, including Telugu, Bengali, Kannada, and Malayalam. He also recorded around 3,500 jingles in 11 languages, establishing himself as one of India’s most prolific playback singers. His ability to convey deep emotions through music earned him several accolades, including six Filmfare Award nominations and two Star Screen Awards.
Tragically, KK passed away following a final performance in Kolkata. In memory of his contributions to Indian music, a statue was erected in the city where he last performed, celebrating the indelible legacy he left behind.
