“This is another setback for ESPN, but a significant opportunity for Sam Ponder,” Steele remarked. “Get ready to see her authentic self. She is truly remarkable.”
In the emotional video, Steele highlighted her close friendship with Ponder, rooted in shared values and faith.
“Samantha has taught me a lot about faith and perseverance,” Steele noted. “She has been resilient at ESPN even amid challenges.”

While Ponder has not yet publicly commented on her firing, she has previously voiced her opinions, notably supporting ESPN’s “College Gameday” host Kirk Herbstreit for defending women’s sports against male participation.
Steele, who left ESPN in August 2023 after resolving a lawsuit regarding her off-air comments about the network’s COVID-19 policies, concluded her message with affection: “I love you, Sam Ponder.”
