A Dallas police officer lost his life in a shooting in Oak Cliff on Thursday night, while two other officers sustained injuries.
The incident began when officers responded to a distress call in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive. According to Kristin Lowman from the police department, they found an officer who had been shot in his marked patrol vehicle upon arrival.
Responding officers exchanged fire with a suspect, resulting in the two additional officers being wounded. Neighbors reported hearing a series of gunshots, with home surveillance capturing about a dozen shots fired around 10:12 p.m.
The injured officers were transported to two nearby hospitals, where a significant police presence was noted outside Baylor University Medical Center and Methodist Dallas Medical Center.
“Our department is grieving,” Lowman stated. “We have officers in the hospital and have suffered the loss of one of our own. We ask for the city’s thoughts and prayers for those recovering, the fallen officer, their families, and our department.”
Following the shooting, the suspect led police on a chase that concluded on I-35E near Business 121 in Lewisville. Lowman indicated that when the suspect exited his vehicle, he was armed with a long gun. Dallas officers then returned fire, resulting in the suspect’s death at the scene.
Lewisville Police announced that the highway would remain closed for an extended period, and Texas Rangers have arrived to investigate the incident further.
