Wordle quickly became a sensation after its launch in October 2021. Initially attracting just about 90 players, it soon grew to hundreds of thousands, making it the most popular puzzle on The New York Times Games app.
In early 2022, the media group acquired the game, which has since captured the hearts of players worldwide, including celebrities.
In 2023, Keegan-Michael Key, the Emmy-winning star of *Key & Peele* and *Wonka*, collaborated with the NYT to challenge players in their group chats.
“There’s a great sense of achievement that comes with starting the day by solving a New York Times game,” Key remarked in 2023.
“It’s also a perfect excuse for a quick catch-up with friends (and some friendly competition). I’ve always enjoyed words and language, and any game that tests my skills is a win.”
