The Iowa Department of Corrections has confirmed the presence of mpox, previously known as monkeypox, at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility.
Mpox is a viral disease that can be transmitted between humans and animals, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noting that it primarily spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact.
The chief of staff for the Iowa DOC provided a statement to KCCI, indicating that the department is implementing strong health measures, including improved sanitation and isolation protocols, to manage the situation effectively.
KCCI is currently seeking information on the number of inmates affected.
