When asked if Harris was abandoning her progressive principles, Sanders responded, “No, I don’t think she’s abandoning her ideals. I think she’s trying to be pragmatic and doing what she thinks is right to win the election.”
Since becoming the Democratic nominee, Harris has moved away from certain far-left positions on immigration, energy, and healthcare, which she had previously supported. In an interview, she asserted that her core values remain unchanged despite these adjustments.
Sanders acknowledged that his views differ from Harris’s but still considers her a progressive. He pointed to shared goals, such as expanding Medicare, increasing Social Security benefits, and raising the minimum wage. He emphasized that while their approaches may vary, they align on several significant issues.
Harris’s campaign has indicated that her policy shifts are aimed at fostering unity and consensus, contrasting her approach with the extremes of former President Trump. A campaign advisor noted that her positions have evolved through her experience in governance alongside President Biden.
