Adam Sandler is set to reprise his role as the unexpected golf sensation in the upcoming sequel, *Happy Gilmore 2*, directed by Kyle Newacheck for Netflix.
On September 9, 2024, Netflix confirmed that production for the follow-up to the beloved 1996 comedy has begun. The film is based on a screenplay co-written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, with the original *Happy Gilmore* directed by Dennis Dugan, known for other Sandler favorites like *Big Daddy* and *Grown Ups*.
The official Netflix account announced the exciting news on social media, sharing a photo from the set featuring a replica of the Boston Bruins jersey worn by Sandler’s character in the original film.
Celebrating his 58th birthday, Sandler shared the same image on Instagram, declaring, “It ain’t over. The way I see it… we’ve only just begun.” This mirrors a memorable line from the original movie directed at Shooter McGavin, played by Christopher McDonald.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, the original film followed Sandler’s character, a down-and-out hockey player who unexpectedly finds success in golf. Earlier this year, McDonald hinted at the sequel during a radio interview, leading to the official announcement from Netflix in May that *Happy Gilmore* would be making a comeback.
Sandler has revealed that Benny Safdie will join the cast, along with NFL star Travis Kelce making a cameo. Christopher McDonald will also return as Shooter McGavin.
In a recent interview with *The Hollywood Reporter*, Sandler expressed his enthusiasm about revisiting this iconic character. “The idea that Tim and I had kept evolving, and we feel really good about the movie,” he stated. “It’s an exciting time for us.”
Interestingly, in 2015, director Dugan had expressed doubt about the likelihood of a sequel, saying, “I can’t imagine he’d ever do that, but in Hollywood, anything can happen.”
With the revival of *Happy Gilmore*, fans eagerly await what promises to be another hit from Adam Sandler and his team.
