Born Howard Beverly in December 1946 in Philadelphia, PA, Frankie Beverly began his musical journey in his teenage years, forming several groups. His first notable success came with Frankie Beverly and the Butlers, whose 1967 release “If That’s What You Wanted” drew the attention of producer Kenny Gamble.

After relocating to California and rebranding as “Raw Soul,” the group caught the eye of Motown legend Marvin Gaye. Gaye not only featured them as the opening act on his tours but also encouraged them to adopt the name Maze, paving the way for their enduring influence in the music industry.
