The New England Patriots’ quarterback situation is a far cry from the days of Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins, or even Heath Shuler and Gus Frerotte. This year, the Patriots drafted two signal-callers – Drake Maye with the third overall pick, and Joe Milton III in the sixth round.

In the Patriots’ preseason opener at Gillette Stadium, it was the lesser-known Milton who created the most buzz. In just two drives, the sixth-round selection completed four of six passes for 54 yards and a 38-yard touchdown, while also adding 22 rushing yards, including an impressive scramble that showcased his athletic ability.

After the game, head coach Jerod Mayo was asked whether he’s prepared for the talk-radio frenzy that Milton’s debut performance will likely spark. “I don’t even listen to that stuff,” Mayo told reporters. “But honestly, Joe went out there. We know he has a big arm. He has the athleticism. He’s getting better with his reads every single day. He has natural leadership ability. But once again, it’s not just about one game; it’s about the full body of work.”

Milton, for his part, was pleased with his outing. “I had a lot of fun man,” the young quarterback told reporters. “It’s a blessing. You know, a lot of people where I’m from, they dream of being in this situation, so just go out there and cherish it all. It means a lot to me. Me, my family and obviously my teammates.”

The Patriots may have selected Maye as their quarterback of the future, but Milton’s preseason debut has generated significant intrigue around the quarterback competition in New England. With his combination of arm strength, athleticism, and natural leadership, Milton could emerge as an intriguing option for the Patriots or another NFL team in the future.
